Campers are organized into three groups that rotate through two
science activities (one with Chad, one with Randy) and a third
counselor lead camp activity.  Each group is further divided into
two smaller groups, each with its own counselor.  The youngest
group splits in half for swim and lunch.
Monday, July 18, 2011:  Today we did a few get to know
you activities and talked about being safe at camp.  We
also played a game that demonstrates good listening
skills.  For our first science activity we conducted a density
experiment and practiced pipetting skills to try and create
a rainbow in a straw.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011:
Today we used our bread and
dust to design a couple
experiments in growing bread
mold by manipulating the
amount of light, moisture, or air
available.  In Chad's room we
learned the science of silly-putty
and created some to take
home.  We suggest not playing
with the silly putty on anything
other than a smooth hard
surface as small pieces can get
stuck in a rug or fabric and be
difficult to remove if they dry.
Tuesday, July 19, 2011:
Today we conducted a test
for acids in candy by
carefully observing the
reaction between different
candies and baking soda.
We also conducted a few
experiments to figure out the
best way to perform a
science magic trick with a
quarter, soapy water, a glass
soda bottle, and a strong
arm...sorry no pictures on
this one, magicians never tell.
Thursday, July 21,
2011:  Today we
continued our study of
polymers with had.  In
Randy's room we
performed more science
magic.  This time we
used paper to create
cylinders and mobius
strips which behave very
differently when they are
cut.
Friday, July 22, 2011:  Today we
took a short field trip to Lars
Anderson Park for a shadow
hopping scavenger hunt (we tried
to stay out of the sun as much as
possible).  Afterwards we played in
the park and were surprised to find
that Queen Mary had hired an ice
cream truck to meet us there.  We
were able to choose from any
water-based treat they had
(predominantly popsicles).
Monday, July 25, 2011:
Today we revisited our
bread mold experiments
and also used diaper
science to conduct some
science magic.  We also
worked with nylon to create
bungee eggs.
Tuesday, July 26, 2011:  Today we had a visit from the New England Aquarium
outreach program.  We learned about the different types of beaches and tide
pools and then got to explore the animals that live in each of those habitats.  We
also received a gift from Judy Saler at cooking camp who sat in out our storytime
last week when we learned about "The Lupine Lady" in the book called Miss
Rumphius.  Judy brought us some lupine seeds from Maine and we got some to
take home and some to scatter around camp just like The Lupine Lady does in
the book.
Wednesday, July
27, 2011:  Today
we walked over
the hill at Lars
Anderson to watch
the Soap Box
Derby.  The
observations we
made of the
soapbox cars will
be helpful for our
design challenge
tomorrow at Junior
Einsteins.
Thursday, July 28,2011:  Today we made
individual batches of ice cream with Chad.  In
Randy's room we participated in the
Mini-Soapbox/Huff 'n Puff Derby.  We were
challenged to build a car that would roll a long
distance when placed on a ramp and that would
also traverse two tables when powered by a box
fan.

Tomorrow is our annual
Egg Drop!
